Maria James has been named Teacher of the Year by the Mississippi Rural Education Association!

The Perry County School District would like to announce that Maria James has been selected by the Mississippi Rural Education Association (MSREA) as the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award for the 4th Congressional District. The Program of Research and Evaluation of Public Schools (PREPS) helps sponsor this award. PREPS is located on the William Carey University campus. She will compete against the other three Congressional award winners for the State award. She is shown receiving a bouquet of flowers from PREPS. They were presented to her by PCSD Superintendent Dr. Scott Dearman and her principal Mr. Shawn Butler.
Maria teaches Kindergarten at South Perry Elementary School. She has taught for 5 years and they have all been in the Perry County School District. She stated, “I know teaching is challenging but I find it very rewarding to know that I can make a difference in the lives of these young children”. Her maternal grandfather practiced medicine in Leakesville. It was his love for the people of Mississippi and the impact he made on their lives that influenced and motivated Maria to make a difference in the lives of the children of Mississippi.
Maria attended the University of Southern Mississippi where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 2016. She is happily married to a wonderful Christian man and they have an energetic, loving two-year-old.
